Spoken Sanskrit - Shibiram

This is a simple and fun way to get started. No pre-requisites or prior knowledge required.

The Shibiram will begin 1st October 2025.

Correspondence Courses

This Samskrit correspondence course is designed to help you learn in the convenience of your own home. It has four levels lasting 6-9 months each. Classes are held via Zoom. The four levels are

  1. Pravesha (प्रवेशः)

  2. Parichaya (परिचयः)

  3. Shiksha (शिक्षा)

  4. Kovida (कोविदः)

At the end of each level, there is an examination held to  assess your knowledge. A certificate will be provided on successful completion of the course. On completion of the four levels, you will be ready to start studying and understanding advanced Samskrit literature on your own. You will also be able to speak and write simple Samskrit.

Minimum Age; 16 years

Fees: There is a fee of NZD 70$. This is primarily to cover the cost of Zoom Calling, Zoom Storage, Website, Domain Name and the book (couriered from India),

Pravesha

This is the first of the four step course.

At the end of this course, you will be able to.

  1. Get into the rich world of Samskrit and Devanagari script

  2. Enrich your vocabulary significantly.

  3. Learn to express basic ideas in Samskrit for normal day-to-day conversation.

  4. Understand the basics of grammar for simple Samskrit

  5. Start understanding many words in Samskrit shlokas.

At the end is an examination to gain entry into the next level

The next batch will start on 12 November 2025 via Zoom

Schedule; Wednesdays 8 to 9 pm  NZST - 60 minutes.

Attendance at Spoken Sanskrit Shibiram preferred

Parichaya

This is the second of the four step course.

What you will learn in this level..

  1. Tenses & Moods.

  2. Understand Sandhi – Vowels.

  3. Introduction to Samskrit Literature.

  4. Start of Shloka Anvaya (Unpacking Shlokas).

At the end is an examination to gain entry into the next level

Pre-Requisites. Completion of Pravesha exam (See above) from any Samskrita Bharati Center.

Anchor 1

Shiksha

This is the third of the four step course.

When you complete this level, you would have learned.

  1. Participle forms.

  2. Basic building blocks of Prose / Poetry.

  3. Usage of different case endings.

  4. Advanced Grammar.

  5. Sandhi – Consonants.

  6. Writing skills in Samskrit.

At the end is an examination to gain entry into the next level

Pre-Requisites. Parichaya from a Samskrita Bharati Center or equivalent.

Kovida

This is the fourth and final course in the four step course.

You learn the following in this level..

  1. Construct and split Samaasa (Compound Words).

  2. Introduction to Alankaara Shastras.

  3. Understand Chhandas ( Prosody).

  4. Get introduced to ancient and recent poets.

  5. Learn about Rishis, their life and works.

At the end is an examination to complete the course.

Pre-Requisites. Shiksha Exam  from a Samskrita Bharati Center or equivalent (See above)
