Is it Samskrit or Sanskrit?

Updated: Oct 2, 2021

Many of you will be familiar with Sanskrit. And you may be puzzled why this site spells it Samskrit.

Well ! sáṃskṛta- is a compound word consisting of sáṃ ('together, good, well, perfected') and kṛta- ('made, formed, work'). And when joined together forms sáṃskṛta.

Over two centuries ago, the spelling was picked up incorrectly by the British and it has continued. This is being rectified by the Universities and now called Samskrit.

In saying that, because the usage of Sanskrit is so prevalent it is not wrong to use it. In this site you might find usages of both spellings.
